Custom Home Design and Self Build Construction

Location: Ely, Cambridgeshire

This project showcases a recent self build home project we completed. Our client approached us with a vision for her dream home on a recently acquired building plot. They sought a collaborative partner who could guide her through the design and construction process while ensuring her vision aligned with her budget.

Project Objectives

Design Consultation: Help the client define their needs and preferences for their new home.
Architect Collaboration: Connect the client with a local architect to translate their ideas into actionable designs.
Construction Management: Oversee the building process, ensuring quality and adherence to specifications.
Budget Management: Deliver the project within the agreed budget while accommodating the client’s design preferences.

Approach

1. Initial Consultation
We started with an in-depth consultation to understand the client’s lifestyle, design preferences, and must-have features for their new home. This collaborative discussion helped us outline key elements for the project, including size, layout, and materials.

2. Architect Collaboration
Recognising the importance of professional expertise, we connected the client with a local architect known for residential designs. Together, we facilitated a series of meetings between the client and the architect to refine the design concept, ensuring it reflected their vision while considering local building regulations and site constraints.

3. Design Development
With the client’s input, the architect developed initial sketches and plans. We organised regular feedback sessions to ensure the design evolved to meet the client’s expectations. Throughout this phase, we provided insights on cost-effective materials and sustainable building practices, enhancing both the design and budget alignment.

4. Construction Phase
Once the design was finalised, we moved into the construction phase. Our project management team coordinated all aspects of the build, including:
Site Preparation: Clearing the land and laying the foundation.
Building Structure: Erecting the frame and roof while ensuring quality craftsmanship at every stage.
Interior Finishing: Collaborating closely with the client to choose finishes, fixtures, and layouts that aligned with her vision.

5. Client Involvement
Throughout the construction process, we maintained open lines of communication with the client. Weekly updates and site visits allowed her to monitor progress and make decisions on materials and finishes, ensuring the home was personalised to her specifications.

6. Budget Management
We implemented strict budget controls, providing the client with regular financial updates. This transparency helped us manage costs effectively, ensuring that the project remained within the budget while still allowing for adjustments based on the client’s evolving preferences.

Project Outcome

The project was completed on time and within budget, with the client expressing satisfaction with the quality of construction and the attention to detail. The final home reflected the client’s vision, with custom features that enhanced both functionality and aesthetics. Post-completion, we received positive feedback from the client, who appreciated our collaborative approach and commitment to their needs.
